The Puppy Biting Survival Guide.

There is nothing quite like the joy of bringing a new puppy home. The fluffy ears, the sweet puppy breath, the... wait, ouch! The tiny, razor-sharp needle teeth. And now you are regretting your decision and asking yourself ‘why is my puppy constantly biting me’? And you may feel like you have tried everything but there is help available.
If your hands, ankles, and favourite clothes are currently covered in puppy teeth marks, we have some good news for you: Your puppy is not being aggressive, and they aren't being "naughty." Here at Rovers Return Dog Training, we work with hundreds of new puppy parents across Broughton Astley, Hinckley, and Lutterworth. We are here to tell you that this behaviour is completely normal, entirely temporary, and easily managed with kind, effective training.
Let’s dive into why your puppy is biting and how you can gently guide them toward better choices.
To solve the problem, we first need to understand it. Your puppy isn't trying to dominate you or wreak havoc. Puppy biting usually comes down to three main things:
Puppies don't have hands. If they want to know what something feels like, tastes like, or how hard it is, they use their mouths. Your hands and ankles just happen to be incredibly fun, moving objects.
Ever seen a toddler throw a tantrum because they are overtired? Puppies do the same thing, but instead of crying, they bite. When a puppy gets too excited, too frustrated, or desperately needs a nap, their self-control plummets, and the biting intensifies.
Puppies need to learn how to use their mouths softly. Through play with their littermates and with you, they learn what is acceptable and what hurts.
It is incredibly common to hear advice like "shout 'OUCH!' in a high-pitched voice to show them it hurts." At Rovers Return Dog Training & Behaviour, we highly advise against this. For many puppies, a high-pitched "Ouch!" or a sudden movement sounds exactly like a squeaky toy. Instead of stopping, it actually increases their arousal levels and turns you into an exciting game.
Similarly, pulling your hands away rapidly or moving your feet quickly makes you look like moving prey. Your reactions matter, and calmness is your superpower.
Here at Rovers Return, we do not advocate discipline. Your puppy is not misbehaving, it is a natural behaviour; therefore, discipline will only confuse your puppy and likely make the behaviour worse.

If you want to protect your skin and teach your puppy a better way to interact, try these positive reinforcement techniques:
Become a Statue: If your puppy starts biting your hands or clothes, freeze. Tuck your hands into your armpits or turn your back. By removing all movement and attention, you teach them that biting makes the fun stop.
Redirect to an Appropriate Toy: Always have a chew toy or a tug rope nearby. The second those sharp teeth contact your skin, gently slide a toy into their mouth instead.
Enforce Mandatory Nap Time: Puppies need up to 18–20 hours of sleep a day! If your puppy goes into a "land shark" frenzy, they are likely overtired. Guide them calmly to their crate or playpen for a peaceful rest. If you need help with mat or crate training, get in touch.
Provide Mental Enrichment: Licking and chewing naturally lower a dog's heart rate and soothe their nervous system. Swap a high-energy game for a stuffed KONG, a Lickimat, or a scatter-feeding session in the garden.
Reward the Good Stuff: Catch your puppy being calm! If they are lying quietly at your feet or chewing their own toy, praise them gently and drop a tasty treat.

If you are living in Broughton Astley, Hinckley, Lutterworth, or the surrounding areas, you don't have to navigate the puppy blues alone. At Rovers Return Dog Training, we specialize in kind, effective, reward-based training that builds a lifelong bond between you and your pup.
